What’s the relationship between Uniswap and Uniswap Labs? Between Ethereum and the Ethereum Foundation? What does a sufficiently decentralized protocol actually entail, and what capabilities does the average holder of a native token have to influence the development of these open protocols outside of forking them? If you step outside of the polarized “crypto bad/crypto good” debate on Twitter, what’s the honest take on the pros and cons of the structures people are using to build unstoppable protocols while navigating the current landscape?

These questions are at the core of crypto and decentralization, but because of their sensitive nature there is very little written about them — it is mostly “soft” knowledge stored in the heads of experienced people, or vague frameworks that don’t mention specific case studies. Understanding these systems is key to how we think about Backdrop and Horizon long term, and regardless of whether you’re building a protocol or just building on top of them, I believe this is one of the most important areas to grapple with. So that’s what I’d like to do here!
